Temporomandibular Joint disorders or TMJ Disorders associated with the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, can result in feelings of pain in the ear, face, head, and neck. TMJ dysfunction often leads to inability to open the mouth widely without pain, for instance, when yawning. Pain commonly occurs when attempting to eat hard or chewy foods such as steak or gum.
At Pouzol Physical Therapy, we evaluate and perform a variety of treatment approaches aimed at restoration of pain-free function. Treatment can include: postural corrections, modalities, manual therapy, diet modification, positive stress recommendations, and education to help maintain the resting position of the jaw. Conservative treatment is quite successful and symptoms often resolve in a minimal amount of treatments.
